1987 Gibson Les Paul Prehistoric 1959 Reissue QUILT TOP VERY RARE! Pre Custom Shop!
Here is a very rare 1987 Gibson Pre-Historic 1959 Les Paul Reissue with one of the most unusual tops we've seen from this era. While most Pre-Historics feature flame maple, this one has a beautiful quilt maple top, something that is nearly unheard of on these guitars. Whether it was a special order or simply an exceptional piece of wood that made its way through the factory, it's certainly not something you see every day.
The top is absolutely stunning and gives this guitar a personality all its own. It also carries what appears to be the initials "FL" or "Floyd Leonard," along with a star and "+" marking beneath the top. From what we've been told by former Gibson employees, these markings were sometimes used internally to identify exceptionally special tops. Looking at this guitar, that certainly wouldn't be a surprise.
Condition is Very Good overall. There are a few light dings around the edges and on the back, with the most notable condition issue being two professionally drop-filled touch-ups near the lower back of the body. The top itself is exceptionally clean with only a few minor marks, and the frets show very little wear.
The guitar appears to be all original with the exception of a set of Seymour Duncan Slash 2.0 humbuckers, which are an excellent match for this style of guitar and sound fantastic.
It has a comfortable late-'50s style neck that isn't overly large, weighs a nicely balanced 8.8 lbs., and comes with an era-correct Gibson USA brown hardshell case as shown.

This Pre-Historic has everything people love about these late-'80s Gibson reissues. It's lightweight, balanced, and has a comfortable medium '59-style neck profile. The Seymour Duncan Slash 2.0 pickups deliver outstanding vintage-inspired PAF tones with excellent clarity, warmth, and sustain. It's an inspiring guitar to play and one that stands apart visually from nearly every other Pre-Historic you'll come across.
