2001 Gibson Custom Shop 1959 Les Paul Standard Reissue KILLER TOP R9 59 Historic!

Here is a quintessential Gibson Custom Shop 1959 Les Paul Reissue from the so-called "Good Wood Era." Built in 2001, this is exactly the kind of R9 that has become increasingly sought after by collectors and players alike. It's a guitar that has aged beautifully over the last two decades and truly has that broken-in vintage vibe.

The Cherry Sunburst finish has mellowed nicely, and the ambered binding that is so common on these early-2000s reissues gives it a fantastic vintage look. The tiger-striped flame maple top is a really good one—strong flame with nice movement and three-dimensionality. It's definitely not a flat "barbecue top." It has depth, character, and looks different depending on the angle, just like the real late-'50s Bursts.

Condition is Very Good Plus overall. There are very minimal marks on the back, a few light dings here and there, and a slight finish reaction on the back that was likely caused by a guitar strap. The nitro finish is also beginning to sink naturally into the grain, giving it the subtle appearance of very light vintage checking. It's aging exactly the way you'd hope a great Custom Shop Les Paul would.

The guitar appears to be original with the exception of one replaced potentiometer. It retains what appear to be the original '57 Classic pickups, although the pickup covers have likely been removed and reinstalled at some point. The original ABR-1 bridge without a foundry mark is exactly what you'd expect to see on a 2001 reissue, along with the original lightweight tailpiece.

The rosewood fingerboard has a particularly exotic appearance, though we are making no claims beyond that. The neck is a wonderful chunky late-'50s profile that really fills the hand without feeling cumbersome.

It comes complete with the original Gibson Custom Shop hardshell case as shown.

The Details

  • Condition: Very Good Plus
  • Originality: Original aside from one replaced potentiometer
  • Finish: Cherry Sunburst
  • Notes: Desirable "Good Wood Era" R9; beautiful tiger flame top; naturally ambered binding; chunky '59 neck profile

Playability & Sound

This is everything you'd want from a great Good Wood Era R9. The chunky neck feels substantial without being oversized, and the guitar has a wonderful balanced feel at 9.0 lbs. The original '57 Classic pickups deliver warm vintage PAF-style tones with excellent sustain, clarity, and harmonic richness. It's a guitar that feels broken in and plays effortlessly.
