2013 Martin Custom Shop D-45 MADAGASCAR Rosewood ADIRONDACK Spruce 1935 Sunburst Custom Order Dreadnought Guitar!

Here is an amazing Martin Custom Shop D-45 style custom order (D-14 spec build), a highly optioned, premium-grade dreadnought that showcases some of the most desirable tonewoods and construction methods Martin was offering at the time.

This example features a truly exceptional wood package, most notably premium-grade Madagascar rosewood back and sides, paired with an Adirondack spruce top and full hide glue construction, which at the time represented a significant upcharge and a true vintage-correct build approach.

The bracing is also Adirondack spruce and scalloped, giving the guitar excellent responsiveness, headroom, and dynamic range. Tonally, this combination is known for producing a very open, powerful, and complex dreadnought voice with strong low-end presence and shimmering high-end clarity.

One of the standout visual and build features of this instrument is the extensive use of Madagascar rosewood appointments throughout the entire guitar, including:

  • Top binding
  • Back binding
  • Endpiece
  • Heel cap
  • Headplate
  • Headplate binding
  • Fingerboard binding

This level of matching wood usage makes the instrument extremely cohesive and visually striking, and it is something rarely seen today due to the increasing scarcity and cost of Madagascar rosewood.

Originally, this was an extremely high-end build, with a retail price at the time exceeding $18,400, and today a comparable build would likely be significantly more due to current material availability and sourcing limitations.

Neck & Feel

The neck has a comfortable low-profile shape, with:

  • Nut width: 1-11/16”
  • Width at 12th fret: 2 1/8”
  • String spacing: 2 1/8”
  • Fingerboard radius: 16”
  • Neck depth: 0.82” (1st fret) / 0.88” (12th fret)

It feels familiar and playable, with a modern comfort profile while still retaining a traditional dreadnought feel.

Hardware & Upgrades

This example is fitted with premium gold Waverly tuners, and it has been upgraded with a high-end Martin Custom Shop pebble-textured hardshell case, which alone represents a significant value addition.

It also features an undersaddle pickup system with endpin jack, making it stage-ready while preserving acoustic integrity.

Condition

Overall condition is very good, showing honest play wear consistent with a well-used high-end acoustic.

Notable wear includes:

  • Finish wear on both sides of the neck around the 2nd fret area
  • A few small finish marks on the back
  • Some light scratches on the treble side
  • A couple of small, well-done drop fills on the top (very hard to see)

Importantly, there is no significant buckle rash, and the guitar remains structurally very clean. The frets retain plenty of life remaining.

Playability & Sound

This is a powerful, full-bodied dreadnought with excellent projection and depth. The Adirondack/Madagascar combination delivers a rich, complex low end with strong articulation and shimmering overtones, while the scalloped bracing keeps it responsive and dynamic at all playing levels.

The action is currently set low and comfortable, making it an excellent player as well as a high-end custom instrument.
